The Telstra deal isn’t expected anytime soon

All eyes were set on the Telstra –NBN deal, over the network integration of the former with that of the latter. A major announcement was due before or maximum by 11th February, when Telstra was due to disclose its profits for the six months. But nothing as such came through.

The government of Australia had in the month of November, offered Telstra $42 billion for the use of its networks and other allied infrastructure for the setting up of NBN’s high speed optic fibre broadband network. Telstra is seemingly not satisfied with the price government has offered and apparently this is proving to be the major roadblock in the development of any favorable response.

According to the latest developments, Telstra’s CEO David Thodey said that he will not give in to any pressures on part of the government or any external party and take his own time to decide the deal as its outcome would affect the interests of the company as well as the shareholders.

The deal is very important for the government because setting up a high speed optic fibre network in the country was one of its main agendas during the election campaign and its high time for it to start working on the same and achieve the promised goals before the next elections are due in the year 2012. It had also devised a plan B to force the company Telstra into conceding to the proposed deal. Not it is a matter of time before anything concrete can be decided on this.
