UK needs Basic Internet First, High Speed Broadband can wait

High amount of Internet usage pattern is being seen in UK currently. This has led to rise in the number of Internet providers in the nation. Most of them promising speed of 100Mbps and above. However some feel providing Internet access to remote areas is more important than high speed net.

Analysts feel there is a need of guidelines that focus on having sufficient broadband speed in remote areas too. They think government should make sure maximum areas are under the reach of Internet first and later plan about super fast broadband speed. Access to a 2Mbps connection in the remote areas will help in supporting small businesses and in return help the British economy grow.

The UK government has set out a proposal to offer 2Mbps broadband to every UK resident by 2012 in the Digital Economy Act. In reality 2.5 million homes do not get 2Mbps or above speed, rural areas being a majority.

BT and Virgin Media have already started rolling out fiber networks across the UK but they say these would not reach some parts of UK. This would leave many Britons without 2Mbps internet access. The government has not yet disclosed how it intends to pay the money that will be spent in the process. Labor party had plans to impose the broadband tax and generate money for payment of the fiber networks but due to conservative party’s heavy opposition the tax was scrapped.

The government’s plan to make high speed available to entire UK would no way a 100% success as BT told before they would be able to cover 40% of UK only. Instead of high speed the government can think of ways to provide basic Internet facilities to the remote areas.

Cumbria couple disillusioned over broadband prices

This news has unearthed the broadband reality in the country. Before this everyone was of the view that currently the country had the best broadband services and coverage which would be multiplied over 10 times with the increase in the coverage of high speed optic fibre broadband connections. But when what happened with a couple in Cumbria hit the newsstands, the citizens came face to face with the fact that the dream of universal broadband in the country is still far from being realized.

Here’s what happened. Ray and Frei Walker stay in Cumbria and have their business in Dufton, near Appleby. Last week they applied to their telephone exchange, where BT provides access, for a switchover from dial-up connection to broadband connection and as a response were given a hefty bill of 45 thousand pound. This despite the fact that many residents in the village do have access to broadband connections but when Walker’s applied for one, they were refused on account of insufficient capacity and asked to pay a bill of 4k pounds if they wanted one.

As a result, they are forced to run their business on slow connection and face lots of problems. Walkers are really disillusioned over the whole issue and reported it to the daily media. What is un-understandable here is that why BT wanted them to pay for the network capacity of entire village. Because of low connectivity, Ray Walker isn’t able to even construct his business’ website which is a must for him.

The Telstra deal isn’t expected anytime soon

All eyes were set on the Telstra –NBN deal, over the network integration of the former with that of the latter. A major announcement was due before or maximum by 11th February, when Telstra was due to disclose its profits for the six months. But nothing as such came through.

The government of Australia had in the month of November, offered Telstra $42 billion for the use of its networks and other allied infrastructure for the setting up of NBN’s high speed optic fibre broadband network. Telstra is seemingly not satisfied with the price government has offered and apparently this is proving to be the major roadblock in the development of any favorable response.

According to the latest developments, Telstra’s CEO David Thodey said that he will not give in to any pressures on part of the government or any external party and take his own time to decide the deal as its outcome would affect the interests of the company as well as the shareholders.

The deal is very important for the government because setting up a high speed optic fibre network in the country was one of its main agendas during the election campaign and its high time for it to start working on the same and achieve the promised goals before the next elections are due in the year 2012. It had also devised a plan B to force the company Telstra into conceding to the proposed deal. Not it is a matter of time before anything concrete can be decided on this.

Telstra now has 1.3 million customers

Telstra Inc. declared its much anticipated first half results and according to it, the Australian telecom major now has a subscriber base of an estimated 1.3 million. The company’s prepaid wireless broadband service gets the full credit for this increase as more and more consumers are opting for prepaid wireless broadband service. This service was launched by Telstra in September, 2008. The revenue from wireless broadband services saw an increase of 31.9% and currently stands at $368million.

The CEO of the company, David Thodey is highly elated at the results and is very optimistic about the future prospects the company. He says that the company is committed to providing state of the art broadband services to the consumers and a handsome return to the stake holders.

BT Home Hub - designed for maximum convenience with minimum hassle for you and your family. All your bases covered in terms of internet use in your house and communications.

But this isn’t the exact case why the first half year results of Australia’s one of the best telecom service providers was awaited. The whole country was actually waiting to know whether the proposed deal between NBN and Telstra would get through or not. Australian government had offered Telstra $42million for its cable networks and subscriber base for its prospective high speed optic fibre broadband project in the country through its flagship telecom company NBN. The deal was proposed in November last year but till now no decision has been reached on it. The price is being seen as the major roadblock as Telstra is seeking more for the external use of its assets. Now we can wait and watch for any favorable or unfavorable developments on the deal.

Join today or spend rest of your life with slow speed connection

Well, this is the last and the final chance for the residents and the businesses in the county of Dorset to ensure its life long access to high speed broadband and internet connectivity. The online questionnaire form for continuing the high speed broadband services, set up and to be provided during 2012 London Olympics, later than the event, will be closed today and the reports on the same will be generated. If the report doesn’t suggest the desire of an overwhelming majority of the people and businesses in the county to continue the services, then it may not get continued after all.

Basically, British Telecom (BT) is setting up networks and exchanges in the Dorset County to link it to the Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy for the 2012 London Olympics. The County Council director of Dorset, Miles Butler, is all upbeat about the proposed communication link up as it will provide high speed broadband services to even the rural areas of the county, apart from the host cities of Portland and Weymouth. He also is of the opinion that it’s the major force that will come from the businesses operating in the county that will impress upon BT to continue the high speed optic fibre broadband services in the region, even after the games.
